This week, Jonathon Heyward makes his long-awaited debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on the 14-17 July. The programme features Mendelssohn’s Fair Melusina Overture, Rossini’s Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra (featuring DSO Acting Principal bassoonist Michael Ke Ma), and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C Major. More information and tickets are available here. Jonathon will return to the DSO in December, with pianist Yeol Eum Son, to conduct Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8. The programme opens with with a world premiere of Pulitzer Prize–winner Tania León’s Pasajes, and Yeol Eum will play Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1. On the 20 July, Jonathon will make his Chicago debut at the Grant Park Music Festival conducting Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8. Also featured on the programme is Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto played by clarinetist Afendi Yusuf, and Farrenc’s Overture No. 1. More information and tickets are available here.
Next month, Jonathon will also make his Mostly Mozart Festival debut, with two performances (2-3 Aug) at the Lincoln Center joined by violinist Joshua Bell. The programme opens with Carlos Simon’s Fate Now Conquers, inspired by a journal entry from Beethoven’s notebook. Joshua performs Vieuxtemps’ Violin Concerto No. 5, followed by Adoration written by Price, the first Black woman composer to have a piece played by a major American orchestra. At the start of his 2022/23 season, Jonathon returns to the US for his St Louis Symphony Orchestra debut and makes a return visit to Seattle Symphony with cellist Nicolas Altstaedt.
